Kokolo, also known as the Kokolo Afrobeat Orchestra, is an American
Afrobeat band from the Lower East Side of New York City, formed in 2001
by songwriter/producer Ray Lugo
The band's name was taken from a 1970's term used in Spanish Harlem and parts of the
Caribbean, often as a pejorative, to describe Latinos of african
descent who were fans of Afro music. Kokolo aimed to invert the
negative connotation of the term through the positivity in their music

In 2009 Lugo began to expand the range of his musical output under the moniker L.E.S. of Bahia, Lagos, Kingston, San Juan, and Harlem all under one umbrella
and echoing Lugo’s eclectic tastes.

into new danceable songs. The specialty has become sophisticated mixing
of old funk samples with 80s rap vocals and hooks, funky breaks, pumpin' beats and trippy lounge breaks
In 2006 BadboE formed his own digital recordlabel together with his

Black Science Orchestra was a musical project headed chiefly by the British DJ and producer Ashley Beedle who used the BSO moniker to release tracks sampled and inspired from rare groove & soul records reworked into acid jazz, house, disco and also downtempo
Mark Daniels and Christopher Bemand first teamed up in 1994 as part of
the seminal British acid jazz band, Marden Hill. Their provocative first
single, "Come On" was
also included on the band's debut album, Blown Away (re-released one
year later in the United States as Hijacked). The album earned strong
critical appraisals, and spawned, as a description for the music,
perhaps one of the most influential terms of the mid-'90s music scene:
trip-hop.
(Ashley Beedle came up with the word Trip Hop describing a Marden Hill
track he was remixing saying - 'This is fucked up, it's Hip Hop but it's
trippy. It's Trip Hop!")

The Penguin Cafe Orchestra: a collective of performing musicians created by classically trained British guitarist, composer and arranger Simon Jeffes; Jeffs and cellist co-founder Helen Liebmann were core members throughout Jeffs life and a number of other musicians joined as the band grew and developed.
Not easy to categorize: ethnic music, particularly African styles, merged with more traditional Western sounds, kind of "modern semi-acoustic chamber music".

including Douge Reuben on vocals, Dan Peppe on bass, Tom Symmons on drums, DJ
Krash Slaughta (aka Paul Smith) on turntables, and Carter himself on samplers

as big beat) with its mix of rock, indie and breakbeats as well as dance and
hypnotic instrumental tracks, the band toured supporting Roni Size and Massive
Attack.

Brothers Ethan (keyboards) and Zac
(guitar) Holtzman started Dengue Fever in 2001 when they discovered they
shared a love for the Cambodian pop music of the 60s. After adding sax
man David Ralicke (Beck/Brazzaville), drummer Paul Smith and bassist
Senon Williams, they went looking for a Cambodian singer. Enter Chhom
Nimol, who performed regularly for the King and Queen of Cambodia . Her
powerful singing, marked by a luminous vibrato that adds exotic
ornamentations to her vocal lines, and hypnotic stage moves based on
traditional dances, complimented the band's driving Cambodian/American
sound (from facebook)
